Drew

“Order up!”

Walt bellowed from the pass-through window at Hair of the Dog, startling Drew so badly he almost fell off his stool. Of course, Walt noticed and began to cackle.

Drew glared at him. “Was that really necessary?”

“Sure it was. You want somethin’ to eat?”

“Not yet. I’m keeping an eye on Cody.”

Walt gave him a nod. “He’s a bit pale.”

“Still recovering. I’m going to send him home if he gets any worse.”

It had been a few days since Cody had stayed over at Shaq’s house. He’d pretty much insisted on going home after he woke up the following morning. Drew hadn’t wanted him to go, but Cody said he needed his own bed. He couldn’t force him to stay, even though Drew thought Shaq might have been considering it.

“When’s Shaq getting back?”

“Dunno,” Drew answered.

Shaq had been called away again, along with half of the pack. There’d been a lot of calls for the hellhounds the past few days, more than usual according to Shaq. Whatever had happened this time had been big. Drew was trying not to worry too much about it. Viceroy had stayed behind while the others left. He was standing at the back of the bar in Solomon’s usual spot, his eyes scanning the crowd. For a Thursday night, it was pretty busy, and Izzy had the night off. Her daughter had a dance recital. Shaq had been planning on going until he was called away. He’d had Drew send the little girl flowers instead. He really was ridiculously sweet.

Another group came in as Drew watched and Shelly came over to the bar with a groan. “More?”

“I’ll help,” Drew said.

She looked hesitant. “I’m not sure you should, Drew. What would Shaq say?”

“Shaq wouldn’t care. And don’t look at Walt. I’m a grown man, Shelly. I can help if I want to.”

She smirked and Walt snorted out a laugh. He glared at them both.

“You seriously think I can’t wait tables?”

“I know you can,” Shelly said. “But I think it’ll annoy Shaq.”

“No, it won’t. He’ll care if you get overwhelmed, or if someone acts like an idiot. He’ll care if Vice doesn’t watch out for us. He’ll care if Walt burns the onion rings again and stinks up the bar because he’s distracted by your new mini skirt.”

Walt sputtered and Shelly turned to him with a stunned expression. “That’s what happened last night?”

“What? You’ve got fantastic legs, woman. What’d you think? I’m dead? Course I saw.”

“And got distracted,” Shelly added.

“They’re fantastic legs. Get out of here. Both of you. God, you’d think this was social hour with the way you two blabber on.”

Drew grabbed a tray, notepad, and pen and made his way to the back of the bar. He needed to be able to write down his orders. He definitely didn’t have Izzy and Shelly’s ability to remember twelve different tables worth of drinks at once. “Vice, I’m going to help Shelly out.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah. Keep an eye out, though, okay?”

“I’ve got your back.”

Drew grinned and made his way to the other side of the room.
